Intelligent Editing Releases New Version of American Legal Style for PerfectIt

Legal style sheet update includes more than 5,000 new corrections

LONDON AND CHICAGO – 23-June-2016. Today Intelligent Editing, the leading provider of software for proofreading, announced the release of a major update to American Legal Style for PerfectIt. This update builds on the law-focused style sheet launched in October 2015. The new style sheet includes over 5,000 additional corrections and now automatically checks footnotes.

PerfectIt is an MS Word add-in that spots consistency and proofreading mistakes in documents. It includes American Legal Style, a style sheet that checks spelling, capitalization, hyphenation, and italicization in legal terms of art based on Black’s Law Dictionary. American Legal Style also spots errors in case citations based on preferences in the Bluebook: A Uniform System of Citation, and it enforces the most pervasive style tips from The Red Book: A Manual On Legal Style by Bryan Garner and The Elements of Style by Strunk & White.

Ivy B. Grey, a practicing lawyer and the author of American Legal Style, worked to anticipate mistakes and recommend intelligent corrections based on real world experience and actual legal documents. Many of the new 5,000 corrections are focused on errors in citations such as misplaced periods, transposed letters in court names, and missing or extra spaces. For example, now “E.D.T.X.” will be corrected to “E.D. Tex.”. Similarly, incorrect citations to bankruptcy courts as “bank.” will be corrected to “bankr.” Additionally, the style sheet will look for accidental repetition of certain legal phrases that are often missed when merging multiple documents. It will also find legal-specific typos caused by dictation software and autocorrect, such as “statue” rather than “statute”. Plus, embarrassing, yet common, typos in the names of some of the most prolific judges and Supreme Court Justices will also be spotted, such as “Justice Scales” rather than “Justice Scalia”.

PerfectIt is used by more than a hundred law firms, as well as thousands of professional editors, around the world. Cascadia Cross-Border Law, one of the most highly-regarded immigration firms in the Northwest, use it to save time and improve the quality of their documents. Cascadia started with just one license and then quickly rolled out PerfectIt with American Legal Style to every lawyer in the firm.

“I'm a perfectionist, so I run PerfectIt with American Legal Style at the end of every letter and every other document that I create. I find it saves me an hour or more each time that I use it,” said Heather Fathali, Immigration Attorney, Cascadia Cross-Border Law.
